I'm guessing that McCor...Thanks for the correction! I'm guessing that McCormack may have disliked either French's frequent satire of Irish mores (often slanted toward his London audiences)or his somewhat conciliatory politics (as the verse sung on my final video and one or two others in the full text of the song) or both.

I'll substitute another Irish tenor's name into the piece for accuracy's sake. My point, of course, is only that some singers have a tendency to overdo the emotional side of songs like this.

Speaking of which and FYI - I have been taken to task for using the term "mawkish" and "Danny Boy" in the same sentence. (I like the song just fine - maybe I should have said sentimental - may change that).

Thanks again!

jkmJim Moranhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14198555155411979643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1875980412212682099.post-88662474725390520022008-10-11T09:13:00.000-07:002008-10-11T09:13:00.000-07:00"I thought I'd upload a John McCormack version, or..."I thought I'd upload a John McCormack version, or Daniel O'Donnell, or some other less-than-reserved Irish tenor"

You'd have a devil of a time uploading a John McCormack version of Mountains of Mourne because he never sang the song. In fact, he declined to sing ANY Percy French songs.

You missed the best recording (IMO) of Mountains of Mourne, which is the one recorded by Brendan O'Dowda, a fine tenor and recognized expert on the life and work of Percy French.

Thanks for posting the other recordings, a couple of which are new to me.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1875980412212682099.post-88672407135142341552008-10-11T09:09:00.000-07:002008-10-11T09:09:00.000-07:00"I thought I'd upload a John McCormack version, or..."I thought I'd upload a John McCormack version, or Daniel O'Donnell, or some other less-than-reserved Irish tenor"

You would have a devil of a time uploading a John McCormack version of The Mountains of Mourne because he never sang the song.
